Labour’s Immigration Policies: Key Changes from CARAG Community Discussion
At Tulia, we’re dedicated to supporting migrants—whether that’s through legal guidance or pushing for fairer immigration policies. That’s why being part of community discussions, like those at CARAG, is so important. These spaces give us a chance to connect, listen, and understand the real impact of policy changes on migrants and asylum seekers. During the discussion, our founder and CEO, Rumbidzai Bvunzawabaya, gave a short presentation, highlighting the critical role of legal support and community advocacy in the current immigration landscape.
Right now, Labour has kept stricter work visa rules in place, with higher salary thresholds and restrictions on dependents. But they’ve put the planned increase in the spouse visa income requirement on hold, opting instead for a more evidence-based review. At the same time, scrapping the Rwanda deportation scheme is a major shift, ensuring asylum claims are processed in the UK instead of through forced removal.
The Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill 2024/25 is bringing tougher enforcement, giving immigration officers more power and targeting human smuggling networks. While these measures focus on security, they raise big concerns about how they’ll affect vulnerable migrants. Meanwhile, deportations have increased, with over 16,000 people removed in recent months. And despite the emphasis on enforcing immigration rules, the reality is that safe and legal migration routes are still lacking.
With all these changes, having access to legal support is more crucial than ever. We’re here to help migrants understand their rights and explore their options—whether that’s appeals, fresh claims, human rights-based applications, or voluntary return programs.
That’s why showing up for conversations at places like CARAG matters so much. It’s about more than just legal advice—it’s about building a strong, supportive community. By working together, we can empower migrants and push for a fairer, more compassionate immigration system.
