New Charter Protects Migrant Care Workers from Exploitation and Job Insecurity

On November 4, 2024, UNISON introduced the Migrant Care Workers Charter to safeguard migrant care workers in the UK on sponsored visas. Salford Council became the first to endorse this initiative. The charter aims to prevent exploitation by ensuring that if migrant care workers lose their jobs, they have support to maintain their immigration status. Key commitments include creating an "ethical recruiter list" to prevent unscrupulous employers from receiving public funds and identifying or acting as an "employer of last resort" for affected workers. This initiative addresses concerns that migrant care workers, whose visas depend on licensed employers, are vulnerable to exploitation due to the risk of visa cancellation if they lose their jobs.
